City Hunter Review + Contest

In conjunction with the premiere of City Hunter on Channel One, SG K-Wave is honoured to be able to preview the premiere episode of City Hunter!

City Hunter Episode 1 Review

Lee Min Ho is finally back on our screens. It’s been a while since we all last saw him on Personal Taste.  And with all the hype around City Hunter, I myself couldn’t wait for the episode to air. And the lucky leading actress this time around is none other than Park Min-young, known for her role as Yoon-Hee in Sungkyunkwan Scandal.

The plot takes place in Seoul, 2011. Lee Yoon-sung (Lee Min Ho’s character) is a talented MIT graduate, working undercover in the international communications team at the Blue House to take revenge for his father. He encounters many dangerous situations both big and smile, while solving cases and taking revenge and earns the title of ‘City Hunter’.

Somebody needs to pinch me. Is it possible for a drama to be this good? Am I under some kind of spell? I’ll admit that my first thought upon finishing the first episode (other than thinking Lee Min Ho is so hot!) was “Wow! That was a strong first episode, now what?” The story was woven well together in episode 1 despite the time travels here and there.

There appears also to be a lot of side stories going one but I couldn’t care less about it (to be honest). I’m just totally taken in with the big plot of Jin-pyo and Yoong-sung infiltrating the Blue House to bring down the Big Five for revenge – one of whom includes the currently sitting president (oooooh!) Exciting stuff! I am also glad that the first episode was all about Jin-pyo and Yoon-sung (Lee Min Ho’s character), rather than trying to tease at every single thing and introducing too many characters which may confuse the audience.

City Hunter does a good job at being what I expected it to be – dark, atmospheric and full of thrills. After the first episode, I was left to wonder – will Yoon-sung take on the role of a guy sweeping out crime from metropolitan underground as what a city hunter is supposed to do or is his “hunter” description merely just a reference to his mission given by his father to take revenge by killing and swiping out the Big Five? I just cannot wait to see how this plays out.

As for Lee Min Ho – he is perfect, perfect for playing the role of Yoon-Sung – a young man born and brought up to mete vengeance. Emotional, fierce, vulnerable and totally immersed in his character, and have I already mentioned hot? Yes, insanely hot. But really, that’s just the icing on top of the cake. But it is no doubt that his insanely hot and charismatic character on screen and connection with the camera and his fellow cast mates, makes me swoon.

With the scene of Yoon-sung and Kim Nana (Park Min-young’s character) standing at a mere distance of each other but oblivious to each other’s presence, I can’t help but wonder how this love story and the rest of the plot plays out.   I find this show so off-the-charts-good and I’m starting to wonder if my judgement has been impaired. But I feel normal and maybe, just maybe, the show is just that good. Now, who’s excited for episode 2?
