Time travel seems to be the talk of the day with increasing number of dramas getting on what seems like a rather lucrative bandwagon. But, did you know that this craze of time traveling began as early as 2003 where, at that time, ‘Thousand Years of Love’ staring So Ji Sub and Kim Sarang was aired?

Now, after nine years, the drama scene sees the return of this highly fictitious yet vastly popular theme with titles such as recently aired ‘Operation Proposal’, ‘Rooftop Prince’ (on going), ‘Queen Inhyun’s Man’ (on going) and ‘Time Slip Dr. Jin’(soon to air). Not only is the storyline intriguing, I must say, the cast is equally exciting too, with good looking male actors and beautiful actresses. It is little wonder why hearts of many k-drama fans were captured in an instant.

The high popularity of such dramas is reflected in viewer ratings where notably, ‘Rooftop Prince’ has been contending for the top three spots weekly ever since it began airing in Korea. It comes as little surprise as ‘Rooftop Prince’ boasts of an interesting storyline.

The story begins with Lee Gak, a crown prince, played by JYJ’s Park Yoochun (or more fondly known as Micky Yoochun from his former TVXQ days) from the Joseon period, being catapulted into present day Seoul, some 300 years forward. Of course, the crown prince did not travel into the future alone. He was accompanied by his entourage of three men, Song Man Bo (Lee Minho who also acted in The Moon That Embraces The Sun), Do Chi San (Choi Woo Shik) and Woo Young Sul (Jung Suk Won), whom he met and had recruited to help investigate the suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of his beloved crown princess played by Jung Yoo-mi.

The quartet was on their way to making a big breakthrough in their investigation when they realised that they were being chased by what seemed like royal soldiers and in a bid to escape, time travelled instead. When they opened their eyes again, the four found themselves in a strange place, or you could say, the living room of Park Ha’s, played by Han Ji-min rooftop house.

Being 300 years too old fashioned, Lee Gak, together with his three faithful courtiers find it difficult to adjust and adapt to their new and more modern surroundings, causing much trouble to both themselves as well as Park Ha. This includes getting locked up in the cell for a night at the police station. Hence, the heavy burden of modernising them drops to Park Ha who willing, with some complains now and then takes them in and teaches them the ways of Seoul-ians now.

In the twist and turn of events, Lee Gak was mistaken for the grandson, Tae Yong (also played by Park Yoochun) of a rich family and was brought into the family business. There, he finds a girl, Se Na (also played by Jung Yoo-mi) who bears an uncanny resemblance his beloved crown princess whom I must remind you was found dead in the Joseon period. Holding onto the firm believe that he must marry Se Na as well in present day Seoul in order for the four of them to return to the Joseon dynasty, Lee Gak poses as Tae Yong and tries ways to get Se Na to fall in love with him.

And as if things were not complicated enough, Se Na, though looks like a really kind and nice lady, turns out to be a really evil and scheming person, just like 300 years ago. She is actually a half-sister of sorts to Park Ha but had never once mentioned about her or her family to anyone. Instead, she chose to lead a life full of lies and deceit just to get her way ahead in life; by using Park Ha as a stepping stone almost every single time. How so very irritating, yes, I agree. I have to admit, every time I see the appearance of Se Na on the screen, it invokes my involuntary reaction of eyes rolling, accompanied by the cringing of my body in sheer disgust.

As the story unfolds itself, things gets increasingly compounded as more and more people gets involved in this twirl of mystical chain of events. I would like to share more of the story with you but I believe that the best way to continue this story is for you to watch it yourself. Trust me; this is one dramedy (read: comedy drama) you do not wish to miss. Where then, can I watch it, you may ask me. 

The answer is simple.

‘Rooftop Prince’ is being aired every Monday and Tuesday at 9.05pm, first and exclusively on ONE (ONE - StarHub TV channel 823, ONE HD - StarHub TV channel 876, ONE (Malay) - StarHub TV channel 124 and ONE HD - SingTel mioTV channel 39) since 23rd of April. Do remember to catch it, to see for yourself why I think this one drama worth watching.

If you however, prefer something more realistic and closer to the real world, then ONE is providing you with another drama choice, ‘Fashion King’ which had premiered on 18th of April on ONE channels.

As its title suggests, ‘Fashion King’ revolves around the world of fashion designers where humble designers in small start-ups in the Dongdaemun market evolved into world class designers. It stars Yoo Ah-In, where he takes on the role of Young Gul. Kang Young Gul can hardly be considered as a designer for he makes imitation designer clothes in a small factory and then sells them at the Dongdaemun market.

Lee Ga Young, played by Shin Se Kyung is raised by the designer and owner of Boutique Jo after her parents died in an accident. She has the potential as a designer and was even accepted by a famous design school in New York.

Along the way, many things happened and Young Gul finds himself in New York as well, seeking shelter from Ga Young. While the duo chummy up to each other, Jung Jae Hyuk, a mighty rich chaebol, played by Lee Jae Hoon comes into the picture and shows his interest in Ga Young. And to complicate this love triangle even further is first time actress Kwon Yuri, from Girl’s Generation. Yuri plays Choi An-na, the ex-girlfriend of Jae Hyuk, whose heart is now beating for Young Gul.

So, in the end, the same old, overused phrase; you have to watch ‘Fashion King’ for yourself to find out how the relationship between the four of them is resolved. However cliché it may sound, it is very true isn’t it?

11th May 2012 - South Korean actor Song Joong Ki will be holding his first Asia tour fan meeting here on May 27, 7.30pm, at Shine Auditorium. Singapore will be the second stop of his tour, and fans can expect a whole string of events that will definitely keep one wanting for more. Proudly brought to you by Sidus HQ and Boom Korea, Song Joong Ki will be spending some intimate time with his fans where he will “Thrill' them by showing another side of him and shower them “Love” through the various interactions at the fan meet. This is the third time that Korean singer, Kim Hyun Joong graced our sunny island. And this time, he was in town for his first stop of his first Asia fan meeting. One thing to note, this was also the first-ever fan meeting that he held in Singapore. But before all that, we met up with him for a little preview of what was to come in his first ever fan meeting here.

In the late afternoon of Wednesday, 2 May 2012, members of the media gathered at the Fairmont Hotel for Kim Hyun Joong Fan Meeting 2012 Press Conference. When the man himself appeared on stage, the very sporting media greeted him together in Korean, “hwanyeong hamnida” at the cue of the emcee. Kim Hyun Joong appeared to be pleasantly surprised and replied shyly first in English then in Mandarin.

Emcee: Welcome to Singapore. This is your third time in Singapore, and in the time away, what do you miss the most about Singapore?

Kim Hyun Joong: I miss the fans in Singapore the most… they are always giving me such a warm welcome and even though the schedule is very tight, I will try to visit as many places as I can because I know that Singapore is well known for her buildings such as MBS, flyer and so on. I will be walking around on the streets, so if you see me, don’t be surprise, please say hi to me.

Emcee: This is your first Asia fan meeting, is there a reason why you chose Singapore as the first stop?

Kim Hyun Joong: It was actually due to the schedule... but I also feel that Singapore is one of the best places to hold the first fan meeting. I’m very happy to be able to meet my fans here in Singapore again and I hope that all my fans will enjoy themselves at the fan meeting as it is an updated version of my performances so far.

Emcee: So, what can we expect at the fan meeting?

Kim Hyun Joong: The best way to know what is to come is to come for the fan meeting~ But, you know, the impression that people have of fan meetings is that a small group of people interacting with their idol but this time, for my fan meeting, the boundaries are stretched and to be honest, it has more of a mini concert cum fan meeting kind of feel to it. So, please come and have fun together!

Emcee: We hear that you are going to high-five all 3000 audience at the fan meeting, is that true?

Kim Hyun Joong: Yes, that true. I’m going to high-five each and every fan that comes to the fan meeting on Friday. The reason why I’m doing this is because I want to make sure that each one of them can enjoy themselves to the maximum and I also hope meet all of my fans up close, to see and remember their faces. I have also worked very hard for this fan meeting, so that I can show a different side to my fans. So I hope everyone will come.

Emcee: Awww… that’s so sweet. But, what kind of different image are you referring to?

Kim Hyun Joong: For this fan meeting, there will be many new and fun elements. I will also be performing songs that I have never performed before.

Emcee: Could you tell us more about the U:ZOOSIN T-shirt and brooch that you will be giving to your fans coming to this fan meeting?

Kim Hyun Joong: I want my fans to be able to bring something back home from the fan meeting apart from the fun we will have together. I want them to have something physical that they can see and remember, that’s the reason why. As for the brooch, I create a new one for every fan meeting or event. I hope my fans will like it as I specially prepared it according to the concept of the fan meeting.

Emcee: Would you like to share with us the music that you listen to?

Kim Hyun Joong: I don’t really have a particular genre but I kinda follow the mood of the weather. For example the weather here, I listen to ballads…

Emcee: Do you have anything to say to the fans here in Singapore?

Kim Hyun Joong: I’m really grateful and appreciative to all my fans here. Without them and their support, I won’t be able to visit here as often and the fan meeting will not be taking place. I really love all my fans here and I’m really doing my best to put up a really good performance on Friday.

Q: If you could choose one record to break, what would it be?

Kim Hyun Joong: I wish to be a singer who can hold a concert with the most number of fans attending.

Q: What do you think of your children pursuing the same career path as you?

Kim Hyun Joong: I wouldn’t stop them. As long as they are not doing anything bad, I will support them.

Q: What’s the real reason behind the frequent use of ‘…’ on your portal?

Kim Hyun Joong: I use it out of habit actually. It’s very similar to the use of ‘lol’ here.

Q: Tell us more about your collaboration with B’z.

Kim Hyun Joong: I have always liked them and I really enjoyed working with them on a Japanese single.

Q: What are some of your future goals?

Kim Hyun Joong: Currently, I’m preparing a new album which is set to be released next year. And once the fan meetings conclude, I will be working on a new drama and more details about that will be released soon.

After holding a successful autograph sessions with Jwalkers the day before, fans were besotted again by Jay Park the moment he appeared on stage the very next day for his ‘New Breed 2012’ showcase held at Dragonfly, St James Power Station.

Kicking off his showcase with ‘Nothing On You’, Jay got his fans crazy an screaming more right from the very start. Throughout the evening, Jay went on to perform songs such as Star, I Got Your Back, Up And Down, Know Your Name and Girlfriend. All of which are tracks from his latest self-produced album titled ‘2012 New Breed’. One could not help but gush over the amazing stage presence, slick dance moves and powerful vocals and rapping skills that Jay possessed throughout the evening.

Joking and interacting comfortably with the emcee (Ken from Radio 100.3) and his fans, it is really not surprising to understand why Jay Park’s fans are so attracted to him. His down-to-earth personality makes one feel like he is your friend, as to being an idol.

On top of that, 5 lucky fans who won a Facebook contest organized by Universal Music Singapore, got a change to share the stage with Jay Park himself. The competition was to draw their own new breed look (akin to the Jay’s 2012 New Breed album cover). These 5 fans then battled it out on stage by dancing to Know Your Name and the one final winner was picked by Jay himself for a chance to take a individual photo with him.

Having just turned 25 a few days prior to his visit to Singapore (his birthday falls on the 25th April), Jwalkers surprised him with a birthday cake (which were actually cupcakes) and even sang birthday songs for him. Jay expressed his gratitude and appreciation towards his fans, even teasing the fans by saying that one of his birthday has came true and that is to be in Singapore to see his fans.

After finishing his performances, Jay held another autograph session for his fans before rushing off for his performance at Star Awards 2012. Through it all, Jay Park did not show any signs of tiredness as he smiled and signed each and every album and greeted them with his utmost sincerity - all for all his fans who were there to see him (we heard that some of them even queued overnight).
