SGK Dance Crew
SGK, official dance crew of SG K-Wave, was founded on the 28th of April 2010. The founding members came to know each other through K-Pop, and sharing the same passion for dance, they decided to form a dance crew dedicated to K-Pop under SG K-Wave. Comprising six dancers: Aggie, Cheryl, Joyce, Lydia, Sam and Stephanie, the group produced their first dance cover of ‘Shock’ by B2ST in June 2010, which was met with favorable responses. The crew then went on to film more covers for songs such as ‘Run Devil Run’ by SNSD and ‘HuH’ by 4minute. Some of these choreographies were also showcased on stage by SGK during competitions like the K-Pop Talent Contest 2010 and the Teenage K-Pop Dance Battle. Despite being a newly formed group, the crew managed to enter the Semi-Finals for Teenage K-Pop Dance Battle, getting off to a good start.
Apart from training for covers and contests, the dancers offered their help in organizing dance sessions for SG K-Wave, encouraging others who share their love for K-Pop and are itching to break a move to join them in learning the latest choreographies by Korean artistes. They started off by teaching routines they already knew, attracting around 20 people each session. The positive feedback led them to learn more popular choreographies such as those for ‘Oh!’ by SNSD and ‘Bonamana’ by Super Junior and guide forum members in learning the dance during these sessions. However, with the beginning of a new year, the members faced the problem of busy and clashing schedules and these dance sessions are put on hold for the time being.
In order to come up with a greater variety of covers and to accommodate each other’s schedules, the members made a decision to expand the crew. With the addition of 2 members in December 2010, Dao Xin and Jocelyn, with more members, the crew was able to produce more covers featuring different members. The crew also set up a channel on Youtube to showcase their covers and videos from performances and competitions. The group also experiments in other areas, like singing.
The members of SGK aim to release more dance and song covers, as well as gain more experience through participating in competitions and performances.
